Barton County historical Society- "Man on the Street" Series

Longtime Great Bend photographer, Dale Riggs, will give a history of his life and how he came to photograph the “Man on the Street” series, at the Barton County Historical Society, at 7 p.m. Monday, June 23. The program is $5 for those over age 16 and free for those under 16 and society members.

Riggs will also present a review of the history of photographers and their work photographing the common man. He will also share examples of early photographers and their work, as well as examples of his subjects who did not make it into print.  Additionally, Riggs will include some of his environmental portraits around the Great Bend area.

The “Man on the Street” series of photographs includes nearly 20 black and white photographs Riggs compiled in the 1980s of various individuals from the area, including postman H. J. Baxter, music teacher P. E. Tilley, cattleman Tom Taylor, painter Jim Queen, and his grandmother, Emma Riggs.  Riggs recently donated the series of photographs to the museum.

The Barton County Historical Society is located at 85 S. Hwy. 281, Great Bend just south of the river bridge.  Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.  Memberships may be purchased the evening of the program.
